Megan Bjella, a recent graduate of Lawrence University, is a passionate environmentalist currently residing in Madison, Wisconsin. While at Lawrence, Megan managed the campus garden and also completed an Educational and Outreach internship, developing a garden-based learning curriculum and working with a local nonprofit to identify and address access issues to fresh food. She also co-chaired the Environmental Responsibility Committee, helping to establish an environmental activism grant for student-let sustainability projects and drafting a resolution to begin addressing residential energy use issues. As an Environmental Studies major, Megan was able to dovetail her passionate activism with her academics, modeling ways to decrease student electricity use through the use of incentives, and writing several specific proposals to help move Lawrence towards becoming a more sustainable institution.
She now works for Community GroundWorks, a nonprofit organization that manages and stewards 31 acres on Madison’s Northside, integrating mixed-income green-built housing, community gardens, an organic farm, a kids’ garden, and restored prairie and woodlands. She divides her time providing administrative support for the organization and interning on the 5-acre certified organic CSA farm. She is also becoming more involved in environmental writing through her involvement in the Climate Community and other venues.
