Through the devastation in the Gulf Coast, American has come together in a collective attack against BP. And rightfully so. However, news is now coming out that the new prime minister, David Cameron has asked President Obama to minimize the press and blame in the States in order to protect the shares of British investors across the pond. Beyond the emotional ties of the many households and businesses that have been affected, there is no logical reason why the media, government, or citizens should disregard Tony Hayward and the BP executives’ colossal screw-up. Readers may recall President Obama’s aggressive reaction to the struggles in finding a solution, stating “I don’t sit around just talking to experts because this is a college seminar. We talk to these folks because they potentially have the best answers, so I know whose ass to kick.” (via Reuters) Clearly, the President knows that the livelihood of the American people and economy rest on minimizing this catastrophe. Although the United Kingdom and the United States have an close alliance, albeit unique, the news of this Cameron’s favor came ironically around the time of England and the United States’ draw in the 2010 World Cup, but also when BP’s stocks had fallen 40% since the news broke (via The Guardian).
Ultimately, this is a matter of national pride and a test for President Obama to remain fixed in his original position of criticism of the indecisive actions taken by British Petroleum. Hopefully one day soon, the U.S. can persevere through the destruction and return to normalcy.
