Senator Boxer – a true conservative!

Yesterday, Apple Levy (GreenGirls) and I attended an event for Senator Boxer held at the lovely home of Laurie David (Inconvenient Truth Producer).

The guest speaker for the event was former Vice President Al Gore.  The conversation was excellent, and the group of people, guests of Ms. David were interesting and diverse and all looked forward to seeing both Senator Boxer and Vice President Gore.  I must confess that my interest was almost exclusively to see Mr. Gore.  I am a true fan of his and always enjoy our time together.   On the other hand Senator Boxer is  a person I have generally have not supported, finding her to far to the left on many issues (national defence) that are critical to me.

But, I will say this, listening to her discuss the role she plays as the leader of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, and thinking of her in contrast to the ranking minority member Senator  Jim Inhofe it made me think as I like to do at times – what’s it mean this lable – liberal or conservative.  Because I am a bit lazy and it is late I decided to only look up – conservative – well the Latin root is “ to preserve”.

USA GORE ENVIRONMENT

To Preserve!  That makes sense – a Conservative – would want to  Conserve – would want to  Preserve.

The light went on!  In this area of Climate Change and Energy Bills and  our worlds  need to end the use of coal, end the use of oil, and to move to cleaner energy – sun, wind, nuclear power, well – these actions are being supported by people who want to Conserve our Planet, they want to Preserve what we have and pass it on to future generations. Ah haaaa – Conservatives!

Senator Boxer – the conservative!

I may not agree with the good Senator on everything – but for me this is enough.  Common ground on the single most important issue facing the world, our children, our grand children.

See even an old guy can learn something new from time to time…..Go Barbara – Go!

The contrast could not be more stark – the so-called “conservatives” who are lining up to run against Senator Boxer would do everything in their power to derail any meaningful efforts to confront climate change. Time for all of us to step up to the plate to support one of the staunchest defenders of the environment in the Senate.

Interesting perspective! I’m curious to now how Al Gore is influencing things from outside of an elected office, and being able to bring influentials together seems like a big piece of that.
