Congratulations to Robin Schepper this weeks’ Climate Community Citizen of the Week!

We met Robin through one of our very close friends and author/partners – Uwe Brandes.

Robin Schepper coaches individuals and groups, leads personal and organizational retreats, and facilitates meetings and strategic planning sessions. Using her 20 years of experience, Robin focuses on developing a strong personal vision for her clients that reflects their needs and values and recognizes each person’s individual gifts, talents and magic.

Robin has been interested in the environment since she was a little girl growing
up in NYC.  She will never forget the advertising campaign on TV where an
Indian Chief had a tear run down his face when he saw people throwing trash out of their cars and into our rivers.  It so moved Robin that in second grade she wrote a letter to President Nixon asking him to do more to combat pollution, his response letter quotes Winston Churchill, “What is the use of living if it be not to make this world a better place for those who will
live in it after we are gone.”  The letter is framed in her home office and
continues to inspire Robin and her family to this day.
The specific reason that we are recognizing Robin is for her recent work with Murch Elementary School in Washington DC. Specifically – helping to design a walk to school called “Safe Routes” program for students – that is both good for their health – and excellent for the environment!

“This past month, our school, Murch Elementary in Washington, DC was given
the 2009 National Oberstar Safe Routes to School Award. We competed with
thousands of school around the country and won.  The federal Safe Routes to School Program was originally designed to help fight obesity and related diseases because children no longer walk or bike to school like they did when I was a little girl.  I became involved mainly because I wanted my kids to be able to walk and bike to school safely and we don’t have sidewalks on every street.  I am so excited about this program because it combines many efforts – health, safety, environment, energy use and bonding between parents and children.  I have worked on presidential campaigns and for environmental groups and over the years everything has become so segmented -
climate change, health care reform, education, etc.  Even though our funding came out of the Department of Transportation it is helping so many different areas and teaching a new generation of children that they don’t need to get in their car to go to school or buy milk or bread, they can walk. And the more children and parents walk, the less we use our cars, we save energy, we pollute less and we reduce the risk of obesity, heart disease and diabetes. My hope is that more cities and towns become more pedestrian and bike friendly that cars are only needed on special occasions, which would be good for our climate, our communities and our children.” Robin

Congratulations Robin and keep up the great work!
