There is an interesting story in the NYT today Oil Industry Backs Protests of Emissions Bill . It discusses how a number of energy firms are having their employees banding together to protest the (or an) energy bill.
This should come as no surprise – right? First it is their right to protest. So in some regard – that is fine. Second we are seeing with the Health Care example that folks are in the mood to fight thus – following on the heals of the very noisy debates we are seeing on health care - it clearly is a model the energy firms were and now are likely to follow.
So – again at some level – teachers….this summer has turned into a treasure trove for teaching civics. We are pushing serious legislation in our nation and the system we have requires discussion and debate and follows rules and procedures which in many ways set us a part from other nations.
The opportunity for those teaching about climate change is to dig in and discuss what the impact is of a Climate Bill passing or not. The impact domestically and internationally. As I have said in the past – I believe that - not acting on climate will have a serious impact on our on going role in international climate discussions – that would be a shame.
Oil and coal will fight any and all attempts to shift fuel sources – they always have and always will. They act in their own best interest. That is not per se wrong – again there should be no real surprise in that.
The climate or energy topic comes down to the American people clearly standing up and saying that they will pay a little more for power – and that over time they want it from non carbon based fuels.
