As we move the climate and energy bill into the US Senate it seems that the role of nuclear power in any deal is increasing in importance. Interestingly, it also seem clear that the Obama Administration and for sure Sec of Energy Chu believe that Nuclear energy will and should play a major role in clean US energy policy going forward. This is going to be an interesting discussion….as for many years the environmental community generally has been opposed to expanding the role of Nuclear power. In discussions on The Hill the Sec of Energy is quoted as saying:
“I think nuclear power is going to be a very important factor in getting us to a low carbon future,” Chu told the Senate’s environment and public works committee.
So….
How is this likely to play out? Could a Senate Cap and Trade Bill be passed that adds a major role for Nuclear power? What would happen in the House?
It is going to be an interesting few weeks…..
